Ray was the owner of the legendary sports bar known as the "Stardust" [in Downey] a gathering place for famous athletes and actors. Stardust regulars included actors, Robert Mitchum, Steve McQueen, and Henry Fonda; Football players Johnny Unitas, Marlin McKeever; baseball stars Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra; boxer Jerry Quarry.

Ray's brother, Johnny "the Fernando Flash" Ortiz, was co-owner until the late 1960s. After Ray bought him out, Johnny co-owned the main Street Gym in Skid Row, and wrote a book about the heydey of the bar.

Ray left two children, Tamara and Raymond, when he passed of pancreatic cancer.
