According to the 1940 Butte Township, Sutter County, California Census, taken on May 7, 1940, Charles Cook and Evelyn Vera (Brill) Schell were living on Pennington Road, Charles, age 57, was born in Iowa, and was working as a caretaker at the county cemetery (now the Live Oak Cemetery located across the street from where they lived). Evelyn, age 46, was born in California, and was working as the Post Mistress at the U.S. Post Office in Live Oak, California.

Charles Schell
Schell - Charles Schell, 76, died Saturday at the home of his daughter in Fair Oaks [7105 Quail Road] after an illness of two years.
A native of Iowa, he had lived on Pennington Rd. in Live Oak for 46 years prior to his illness. He was a retired rancher. He was preceded in death by his wife who died in 1957.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Marjorie Armstrong of Fair Oaks and Mrs Roberta Stanton of Live Oak; a sister, Mabel Schell of Chico; a brother, Frank of Chico and four grandchildren.
Funeral services are scheduled Wednesday at 10 a. m. in Gridley Funeral Chapel. Interment will be in Live Oak Cemetery.
