During the Civil War, T. J. Hearst served in the South Carolina Volunteers in Company; which was one of the most distinguished regiments of Major General Joseph B. Kershaw's Brigade, seeing action from 1st Manassas to their surrender at Greensboro, North Carolina in 1865.
While on leave, on April 12th 1864, Thomas married Miss Mary Josephine Connor, daughter of Alexander P Connor and the former Miss Elizabeth Bradley, in Cedar Springs.
