John K. Beck Sr. lived a full life that was devoted to the Lord, to his family, and to community service. He was born Dec. 28, 1920, in Kerens, the son of John Caleb and Clyde Daniel Beck.

Beck died on Jan. 9, 2011, at his beloved ranch outside of Kerens due to heart failure.

He was a rancher and a petroleum landman, but earlier in his life he worked for Elmin Howell's Car Dealership as a bookkeeper. In the 1950s he raised English shepherd cattle dogs for a national market. Much of his life was spent in Democratic Party politics. In the late 1950s, Beck worked with Burton Sneed and Beatrice Jones to help African Americans vote, almost a decade before the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was passed. He was the Democratic Party County Chairman in Navarro County for 16 years and served on the Kerens City Council for about a decade in the 1960s. He played a leadership role in the efforts that brought a hospital to Kerens in the late 1960s. He was a member of the Kerens Presbyterian Church from an early age, he served that congregation as a member of the session, treasurer, Sunday school teacher, and occasionally as a replacement pastor for well over fifty years.

Beck married Cornelia "Kenna" Watson on April 25, 1959. After living in Philadelphia for six weeks, the couple made their home in Kerens. They have two children, Dr. Nancy Clyde Beck Young and Dr. John Keitt Beck Jr. Nancy is

married to Dr. Mark E. Young, and they live in Houston with their son, Thomas Eldon Young. John Keitt is married to Shari Beck, and they live in Corsicana with their children, John Keitt Beck III, Rudy Andrew Beck, and Sarah Ann Beck.

Visitation is at Paschal Funeral Home from 5 until 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2011.

Funeral services will be at the Kerens Presbyterian Church at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 13, 2011, the Reverends Charles A. Reese, Lynette Soloman, and Johnny Vannibuls will officiate. Pallbearers are Brian Arnold, A.L. Atkeisson, Bobby Henderson, Brett Latta, Henry Lindsey, Gerald Thomas, and Randy Tolliver. Honorary pallbearers are Collie Bluitt, Chad Clemente, Eddie Lee Hall, Joseph Edward Hall, Willie Hall, Richard Jennings, and Michael Zwernemann.
