This memorial updated November 14, 2012 with corrections to her DOB and DOD & locations, updates to her name, and the addition of two death notices found for her. Her death was listed in error as May 10, 1893 in a family group sheet found for the King family; after being notified that the cemetery transcription had the DOD as April 27, 1893 a fresh look was taken in the microfilm records at the Fairfield Public Library, Fairfield, Iowa, and the two death notices were found that were published on May 3rd and May 4th. Having the right DOD does make a difference in finding death notices, etc. Thanks to J. Baker for bringing the correct DOD to the attention of this contributor.

The first name appears as "Susan" in the two death notices, but is "Susannah" in the other sources mentioned below. Will adapt this memorial to have "Susannah" for the first given name, but "Susan" as the nickname, pending any futher clarification.

Also: Using the maiden name spelled as "Landess" in the two obituaries found for her. Her maiden name was found in the biographies of son Perry as "Landes". Biographies in 1890 and 1912 sometimes used variations of names it should be noted.
---------
Some sources used Ohio for Susanna's birth location. It appears from the biographies below that she was born in North Carolina but soon moved with her parents to Highland county, Ohio, which may account for some misunderstanding of where she was born. The exact birth date varies in sources; will use April 19, 1802 per cemetery listings and extrapolated DOB from her death notices.

Wife of Morris King, believed to have been married August 2, 1820.

It appears from several sources that Morris and Susannah Landess King were buried in this cemetery, possibly with several children as well. Susannah died in Fairfield, Iowa according to one family group sheet, but that appears to be in error. Death took place in Lynchburg, Highland county,OH.

Two of their children were Allen King and Perry King, who both moved to Fairfield, Jefferson county, Iowa (where this contributor lives) and they and some of their respective families are buried in Evergreen cemetery in Fairfield.

Mrs. King was the mother of fourteen children, thirteen of whom lived to have families of their own. Mr. Perry King will soon be fifty years old, yet he was next to the youngest of this large family. Her husband died forty years ago. She had made three trips to Fairfield to visit her children here, the last one being four years ago. She was a devout member of the Christian church, and truly indeed a mother in Israel."

".....(sic. Perry) the twelfth in a family of thirteen children, whose parents were Morris and Susannah KING. His father, a native of New Jersey, died in 1851 when our subject was a lad of six years. He married Susannah LANDES, who was born in North Carolina in March, 1802. During her childhood she removed thence to Kentucky and when a maiden of twelve summers, accompanied her family to Ohio, where she is still living at the advanced age of eighty-eight years. She still enjoys a fair degree of health and, in 1889, made a visit from Ohio to Mr. KING in Fairfield. The family is worthy of special mention for various reasons. It consisted of six sons and seven daughters, all of whom lived to mature years and were married. None of the sons ever used whiskey or tobacco, three of the number wore the blue in the late war, one was killed in Missouri by deserters from the Union army during the war, one is a farmer in O'Brien County, Iowa, and the other was a teacher of prominence, and died in Fairfield while visiting friends in that place...."
