The son of William & Sarah Adams, in 1860, he was a laborer living in Lower Windsor Township, York County. He stood 5' 8" tall and had light hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted August 12, 1863, and mustered into federal service at the draft rendezvous in Carlisle August 13 as a private with Co. G, 49th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was promoted to corporal April 15, 1864, and honorably discharged with his company May 16, 1865.

He married Rebecca ? and fathered Ulysses S. Grant (b. 08/??/65), Katie (b. @1866), Cora V. (b. 09/??/70), Paul (b. 04/??/70), William (b. @1873), Helen (b. 04/??/74), Foster (b. 07/12/83), Ruth (b. 04/??/87), and Naomi (b. 04/??/90). In 1890, he lived in Hellam Township, York County.
