Julien Leopold Raye was born June 4, 1938. According to his death certificate, he immigrated to America from Ghent, Belgium. The 1900 census says Germany. It is possible that he came from Belgium but went to Germany to find a ship to America.

He arrived in America in 1861, just in time to fight in the Civil War. He evidently came in through New York, as he ended up a private in the 165th New York Infantry. At some point between 1861 and 1866, he came to Texas.

He married Jesusa in about 1866 and I assume it was somewhere around Cameron County, which is next door to Matamoros where Jesusa was born. They were probably living in Brownsville for the first few years. Magdalena was born there is abt 1868 and Julian in 1870. Helen and Matilda were both born in Corpus Christi and Marguerite and Refuge were probably both born in Austin. Marguerite's death certificate gives Austin as her birth place and Refuge was born later.

In the 1900 census, Julien and Jesusa have taken their grandson, Alfred to raise. He is listed as their adopted son so Julian Jr. must have already passed. But, Alfred is only 5 years old, so Julian must have died in 1897 or 1898 and not the 1890 previously reported. They stayed in Austin until 1906-1907 then moved on to Jefferson County. They were in Beaumont in the 1910 Census.

Julien died 28 November 1922.
