Hugh Cooper was a weaver by occupation. He came to America with Mary Kelso Kelsey Cooper (Amberson) and five children from Northern Ireland about 1760. Settling in Baskin Ridge, Sommerset County, New Jersey. Hugh and Mary Cooper had five children: Robert, Elizabeth, Jane, John, & James.
Hugh Cooper and Mary Kelso Kelsey Cooper (Amberson) divorced. The following announcement appeared in The NEW YORK MERCURY, November 8, 1762:
Baskinridge, October 26, 1762
WHEREAS, Mary, the Wife of Hugh Cooper, of Basinridge, in the county of Somerset, hath for some time past behaved herself very unbecomingly, and that privaely made away with an confiscated a considerable part of his personal Estate: I the said Hugh Cooper have therefore been obliged to discharge her from my bed; and as she continues in her state of separation, without any apparent desire of cohabitging again with me, and without the least profession of amendment, I do hereby forbid any person whatsoever to trust her the said Mary Cooper, on my account, for I will not pay any debts of her contracting, after the date hereof.
There is no proof "THIS" Hugh Cooper was married to Ellen Gill. As a matter of fact, Eleanor (Ellen) Kelso/Kelsey was Mary Kelso Kelsey Cooper's (after Mary's divorce from Hugh Cooper - Mary married Matthew Amberson in 1763) sister. Eleanor (Ellen) Kelso/Kelsey married Robert David Gill (1720 Ireland - Jun. 30, 1804 Chester County, South Carolina, USA).
Lastly, in Hugh Cooper's Will, 1793, there is no mention of a wife.

When HUGH COOPER and his twin brother Robert Gill were born in 1720, their father, Andrew, was 22, and their mother, Margaret, was 22. He married Mary Kelsey (Kelso) and they had five children together. He then married ELLEN GILL KELSEY and they had 12 children together. He died in June 1793 in Chester, South Carolina, at the age of 73, and was buried there.
