Editor's note: The Dunn's arrived in the Trenton area in 1856. It was Emily's husband, Edwin S. who in 1857, purchased the land bordering the north shore of Freeborn Lake. It was his decision that this would be the location of a townsite and he named that proposed townsite, Freeborn.
According to the Freeborn Cemetery manual, Emily had a twin sister, Emeline. Emeline was a teacher. The first classroom with Emeline as teacher, was in the Edwin S. and Emily Dunn's log home (located on property near the self-serve gas station in town). Summer 1857, Miss Emeline Allen teaches first sesson of school.
They had twin brothers, Orlenzer and Ormanzo who came to Austin in 1856. Orlenzer was Austin's first doctor. Ormanzo was educated in law and served as Mower County Auditor, Probate Judge and during the Civil War was named provost marshal for the southern half of MN. Olenzer had two sons who followed him in the medical profession, one of them practicing in Austin.
Emily Dunn was the first burial in Freeborn Cemetery.
