Finley Vance Holmes and his family lived at old homestead of Valley Grove built by his grandfather and where Finley was born. In the early days at Plum Point, MS he was manager of the farmlands, the cotton gin, and Valley Grove's own general store. He later became one of Shelby County's best known planters.

Miss Evie, his second wife, was taken after Willie had died - about 1928.

Lived Whole Life in
Ancestral Home

Finley Vance Holmes, one of Shelby County's best known planters and active Methodist Church worker, died at his home at 6:30 p.m. yesterday at his home on Chulahoma Road, Whitehaven, after a months's serious illness. He was 68.

Mr. Holmes died in the home in which he was born and in which hehad live all his life the ancestral home, full of historic memories, built two years before the Civil War.

Brother of the late Judge Elmore Holmes, prominent Memphis attorney, Mr. Holmes had ... the estate and wide farm ... interest of his home. He had lived in active health until a year ago.

He was the son of Francis and Lizzie K. Holmes. His first wife, Mrs. Willie Harrison Holmes, died in 1927. He had been superintendent of the Longstreet Methodist Church for almost 50 years.

He leaves his wife, Mrs. Evie Holmes; a daughter, Miss Lucy Clark Holmes, Whitehaven; three sons, Finley V. Holmes Jr., Whitehaven; Francis Holmes; and Dr. J. E. Holmes, Memphis; two brothers, Clark Holmes, Hernando Miss., and Herbert Holmes, Senatobia, Miss.; two sisters, Mrs F. M. Fant, Coahoma, Miss., and Mrs. A. H. Hathaway, Mountain View, Okla.

Mr. Holmes also was the uncle of Irene Beasley, well known singer, and was the stepfather of Andrew Collingsworth.

Services conducted by Rev. C. A. Riggs and Dr. H. S. Sptagins, were to be held at 4 p.m. today at National Funeral Home. Burial was to be in Bethlehem Cemetery, near Capleville, Tenn.
