Son of Christ Gartman (born in Switzerland) and Ida C. Pogue (born in Oregon.)

He was a callboy at the Northern Pacific and was well-known in Missoula. He was survived by his widowed mother and two brothers: Frank, in Missoula, and an unnamed brother working in Spokane. His father Christ had died the July prior from injuries sustained while working on the Chicago, Milwaukee, and Puget Sound at St. Maries, Idaho.

Dutch and his friend, Babe Palmer, were returning to Missoula from Spokane and got off a freight train at the St. Regis junction. They spend the day around the junction, and had a drink late in the afternoon at a saloon in Middle Town. They left the saloon and went down into the brush about a quarter mile away, toward "the old town." According to his companion, Dutch said he had a trick to show him and pulled out an automatic revolver, removed the clip, and whirled the gun around on his finger. His companion claimed that he told Dutch not to do it and ran away before hearing a gunshot behind him.

Unfortunately there was a bullet in the barrel, and Dutch shot himself in the heart and died instantly.
