John Stephens was a farmer. He came to Platteville in 1841 with the rest of the "Stephens Colony" of 52 persons, including his wife Catherine Repper born Dec. 16, 1801 to Richard and Honour (Jane) Ripper (note change in spelling) in England and who came here in 1842. He served as a member of the Town Board for several terms and held other town offices, and lived to almost 94 years old. He and Catherine had 7 Children. Catherine died Feb. 10, 1880 in Platteville and buried in Hillside Cemetery.
