She was married to George Washington Hower on 10 September 1876 in Bloomingdale, VanBuren County, Michigan, USA. Together, they had 8 children: Minnie Augustua (1877-1938), Minerva "Elizabeth" (1879-1960), Laura Emily (1881-1946), Sarah "Addie" (1884-1976), George Martin (1886-1952), Jess Frank (1892-1972), Bertram William (1897-1985), and Charles Eugene (1900-1964).

Sources differ on Emma's parentage: Most sources name Jacob Rarick, from Indiana, but her death certificate names John Rarick, from Indiana. All sources agree that Elizabeth Spillers Rarick was her mother but although most sources say Ohio, again the death certificate differs by stating Elizabeth was from Michigan.
