Clara grew up in southern Ohio. She married Josiah Cyrus Martin and the couple had five children, four girls and one boy. She eventually seperated from her husband and moved to the Toledo area with her children. He remained in southern Ohio. Although they never divorced, they remained seperated for the remainder of their lives. Clara worked several jobs, always as a cook, and eventually landed the position of head cook at the Commodore Perry Hotel, in downtown Toledo. She enjoyed traveling throughout Ohio visting with relatives, and cooking in her spare time. She passed away at the age of 81.
