He was 19 years old to the day when he died in the Mann Gulch fire of 1949--He came within feet of making the ridge where others survived.---Eldon Diettert.
He was a Missoula boy, the son of a professor at the University of Montana
where Eldon was majoring in forestry. “Mann Gulch was his first jump and that day was his
19th birthday. Eldon sat next to me during part of the trip and told me (Earl Cooley) about the
family celebration he was going to miss. He reminded me to call his mom and tell
her where he was. I said I sure wouldn’t forget and, in fact, I’d probably eat his
cake for him.”
