Joseph Ernharth was born above his father's bowling alley on Broadway in West Park (Stowe Township), Pennsylvania. He married his childhood sweetheart Rosemarie "Amy" Geisler on 30 May 1947 in St Mary Help of Christians R.C. Church. He was a lifelong member of the parish and a dedicated family man and husband. During the early 1940's he coached the "Rox Rebels" sandlot football team. He was a Civil War history buff and very active in local politics. Joe and Amy had four children.

His parents were John Felix Ernharth and Cecelia Hill (original spelling was Hull w/an umlaut over the u.) His brothers and sisters included John, Cecelia (Gall), Anna (Schuster), Veronica and Bernard.
