Fern Lorraine Upson, 85, of Selah, passed away Friday, March 27, 2009 at Willow Springs in Yakima. Lorraine was born on October 7, 1923 in Keltner, Missouri to Clon C. and Rosa Hall Applegate. She attended Sparta High School, which she had to walk eight miles everyday to catch the bus. She graduated in 1943 earning her teaching certificate. After graduation, her family answered the call of the government to work in the shipyards of Vancouver, Wash, where she earned her welders certificate and helped weld the ships. She returned home to Missouri after the war. In 1946, she returned to Washington State with her sister Pauline and met and married Ernest V. Upson in Yakima on August 16, 1946. Lorraine and Ernest settled into their first home on Tibbling road in Selah, where they welcomed daughter Carol and son Lonnie. They later moved to Home Ave. in Selah and welcomed son Kevin. This was their home until Ernest passed away and Lorraine's health started to fail. She was a hard worker, through the years she worked in the canneries and the fruit warehouses and as a homemaker. She taught bible school at the Selah Bible Baptist Church for 30 years and was a devoted reader of the bible. Lorraine never turned anyone away. She always enjoyed visiting with her friends and family. She also enjoyed quilting, sewing, making rugs, crafting, picking mushrooms and yard-sales. She especially enjoyed all her travels with nieces Donna, Peggy and Carmen. She is lovingly survived by her daughter Carol (Jim) Osterhout of Swan Valley, Idaho, son Lonnie (Sandy) Upson and son Kevin Upson all of Selah. A sister, Goldie Richardson of Keltner, Missouri. Grandchildren: Kenly (Tara) Osterhout of Phoenix, AZ. Heidi Osterhout of Idaho Falls, ID. Lonnie (Ashley) Upson Jr. Ron (Krystal)Upson, Stephanie Upson and Tori Upson. Great Grandchildren: Taylor, Audrey, Joslyn and Preston Upson, Cody and Markus Osterhout.
