Mr. Iler enlisted as a private in the United States Army on November 12, 1942, at Fort McPherson in Atlanta, Georgia. At that time he had completed grammar school and worked as a farmer; he was married, and was 5' 7" tall, weighing 134 pounds.

He is buried between Lillian Iler (1905-1989) (who shares a double headstone with Clarence Iler (1920-1992)) and Daniel Iler (1901-1990) (who shares a double headstone with Clara Iler (1902-1989.))
