John served as a cook in the 322nd Field Artillery of the United States Army. He fought in the Meuse-Argonne offensive and was severely wounded by a shrapnel blast on September 26, 1918. He fully recovered from his injury and was discharged honorably on April 15, 1919.

John eventually settled down in rural Michigan where he and his wife Marie owned a farm until 1954.
