Born in Ward County, Texas to Bernice Easter and Jodie Buford Fancher (WW I Veteran).

On August 4th 1959, at the age of 18, James enlisted in the US Navy. Following basic and advanced communications training, he was assigned to the USS Proteus (AS-19). The Proteus was a submarine tender (supports and supplies submarines) that served in World War II and was recommissioned on July 8th, 1960. It is unclear if James was to board the Proteus following a furlough or if he had joined the ship and then was granted a furlough. On January 10th, 1961, he died at the Shelby General Hospital, Center, Texas as the result of an automobile accident in Joaquin.

Services for James were held at the Joaquin Church of Christ with Mangum Funeral Home, Center, Texas handling the arrangements. Burial followed in Oaklawn Memorial Park, Center. Day is done, God is nigh.
