Killed while fighting in the Civil War. (exerpt from http://blogs.knoxnews.com/civilwar/2011/03/two-old-soldiers-receive-tombstones.html) Col. Thomas, climbing for all he was worth up the embankment and waving his sword, was riddled by Union soldiers standing behind cotton bales wrapped in leather. He fell into the ditch with 19 bullet holes in his body.

December 1st 1863-- This morning Ed Thomas caused his fathers remains to be disinterred from field Infirmary & buried at the private graveyard of a Mrs Crawford about a mile from our Camp & 3 m fr[om]: Knoxville
