The son of Adam & Maryland-born Mary (Mort) Ditmore (or a variety of other spellings), in 1860 he was a laborer presumably living in Paradise Township, York County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census. He stood 5' 9" tall and had brown hair and gray eyes. He married Leah Deardorff or Dierdorff October 4, 1860, and fathered Wesley P. (b. 07/??/77).

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in York August 31, 1864, mustered into federal service in Harrisburg September 3 as a private with Co. B, 209th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 31, 1865. He is on the roll as "Dethmore" but applied for his pension as "Dittmore."

Following Leah's death, he married Mary Ann lnu. In 1890, he lived in Dover Township, York County, and, in 1900, in Hamilton Township, Adams County. He applied for a military disability pension but abandoned it, and the file contains only a few documents. Cause of death is listed as "Bright's disease" with "spinal injury due to a fall" a contributing factor.
