George was the second son born to Gavin and Libby Stephen. His Mom passed away in 1900 when he was not yet two, and his baby sister a few months later, leaving George and his brother Wes with his grieving father. His father remarried in 1905 to his mother's cousin Jemima "Mima" Webb and the family moved to Saskatchewan where two sisters were born. The family ended up in the Grande Prairie area where George and his father ran a sawmill for years. George got married in 1923 to Gladys May (Beymer) Brown (1906-1995) and they had three children; Mary (Len Kilgour), George "Bud", and Margaret (Garth Walker). George and Gladys moved to Vernon, BC where he passed away in 1971.
