It appears that the parents of Winnifred F. Ward were Samuel Ward (1780-1857) and Susannah (Cannon) Ward (1789-1819?). According to his FAG memorial, Samuel C. Ward was born in Virginia, became a planter in South Carolina and served in the War of 1812. He and his wife, Susannah, moved to Cherokee Co., Alabama in 1834 with their 8 children; later moving to DeKalb Co., AL where he spent the rest of his life. They owned a farm in Little Wills Valley, which is between Collinsville and Gadsden. NOTE: The death date presently recorded today (05 May 2019) on the FAG memorial of Susannah (Cannon) Ward is "06 Oct 1819 (aged 29–30)" which must be an error if she was recorded as migrating to Alabama with her husband in 1834.

The 1850 US Census of Division 25 of DeKalb County, Alabama enumerated the household of 69 Y/O Samuel Ward, a farmer born about 1871 in Virginia. Also living in the household was 35 Y/O Elizabeth Ward, born in South Carolina; 8 Y/O female, Marritra Ward, born in Alabama; and 60 Y/O Abigah Brooks, a mechanic born in North Carolina. NOTE: See the 1840 plat map and the 1850 US Census below which record the family of Andrew Jackson Berry and his wife, Winnifred (Ward) Berry living very closely to Samuel Ward in DeKalb Co., AL. "Elizabeth Ward", recorded in this census, received $1946.34 from the settlement of the estate of Samuel Ward on 10 July 1860, probably indicating she was his daughter although no document in his extensive probate record directly says so. Elizabeth signed a document similar to one attached for the inheritance of Andrew Jackson Berry and his wife, Winnifred (Ward) Berry.

NOTE: A document obtained from the extensive Probate Record of Samuel Ward, deceased 1857, DeKalb County, Alabama, dated 10 July 1860, records that a decree was rendered by the administrators of the estate of said Samuel Ward as payment in full in the final settlement of the estate of Samuel Ward, in favor of A. J. Berry and his wife, Winnifred Berry. The amount of the settlement was nineteen hundred forty-six and 36/100 dollars ($1946.36) Both signed the document and a separate receipt. A copy of this document is attached. Although the documents in the probate record of Samuel Ward do not specifically state that Winnifred (Ward) Berry was his daughter, they infer as much. Winnifred (Winnie) Ward married Andrew Jackson Berry on the 26 Apr 1835 at St. Clair Co., AL.

The 1840 US Census of DeKalb Co., AL enumerated the household of Andrew Jackson Berry, Sr., Age range 20-29 (Actual age 25 Y/O) and his wife, Winnifred (Ward) Berry, age range 20-29 (Actual age 29 Y/O).

Attached is a 21 Apr 1840 Plat Map showing DeKalb Co., AL near Collinsville, which recorded land owned by Andrew Jackson Berry, Sr. (Underlined in "RED") and his father-in-law's (Samuel Ward) near-by land (Underlined in "BLUE"). Two (2) squares on the map are involved in their underlined land parcels. They are the 3rd squares from the left on the bottom two rows. NOTE: This 1840 plat map confirms that Samuel Ward was living in DeKalb County, AL in 1840.

The 1850 US Census of Div. 25, DeKalb Co., AL enumerated 35 Y/O Andrew Jackson Berry, Sr. a farmer born in TN, and his 38 Y/O wife, Winnifred (Winnie) F. (Ward) Berry, born in South Carolina. Children in the household were: 11 Y/O John F. Berry born in AL; 8 Y/O Samuel Ward Berry, Sr. born in AL; 5 Y/O Mary Berry born in AL and 3 Y/O Hugh P. Berry born in AL. NOTE: The naming of their second son, Samuel Ward Berry and their living in such close proximity in DeKalb County, AL to Samuel C. Ward, would be further circumstantial evidence that Winnifred F. (Ward) Berry was the daughter of Samuel C. Ward and his wife, Susannah (Cannon) Ward.

The 1860 US Census of Lebanon, DeKalb Co., AL enumerated the household of 45 Y/O Andrew Jackson Berry, Sr., a farmer born in TN, and his 48 Y/O wife, Winnifred (Winnie) F. (Ward) Berry, born in South Carolina. Children in the household were: 18 Y/O Samuel Ward Berry, Sr., a farm laborer; 15 Y/O Mary Berry; 13 Y/O Pinckney Berry; 9 Y/O Hannah Berry; 5 Y/O Andrew Jackson Berry, Jr. (b. October 1854-See 1900 Census of Bell Co., TX)

Post-Civil War, the 1870 US Census of Collinsville, DeKalb Co., AL enumerated the household of 55 Y/O Andrew Jackson Berry, Sr., a farmer born in TN, and his 58 Y/O wife, Winnifred (Winnie) F. (Ward) Berry, born in South Carolina. NOTE: Enumerated in the household next door was their 30 Y/O son, Samuel Ward Berry, Sr.; head of household, a civil war veteran and a farmer born in AL. Samuel's 24 Y/O wife, Mary Ann (Wilson) Berry, born in AL (no occupation) was also enumerated in his household. Living in their household was their 5 Y/O daughter, Ada Viola Berry, born in AL, and Samuel's 15 Y/O brother, Andrew Jackson Berry, Jr., who was attending school. Andrew Jackson Berry, Jr. was born in October 1854-See 1900 Census of Bell Co., TX. There is no obvious explanation why Andrew Jackson Berry, Jr. wasn't living in his parent's household next door. Another occupant of Samuel's household was 48 Y/O "Mary Berry" (Housekeeper) listed as "Black". She may have been a retainer from before the Civil War.

On this same 1870 US Census page, two households away from his parent's, Andrew Jackson and Winnifred Berry, Sr., and his sibling's households, was the household of 23 Y/O Hugh P. Berry, a farmer born in AL, and his 23 Y/O wife, Sarah M. (Ventress) Berry, born in TN (See 1850 census above). Living in their household was their 1 Y/O son, Francis L. Berry. Other occupants of the household were: Sarah M. (Ventress) Berry's 45 Y/O mother, Mary E. Ventress, born in TN and Sarah's 21 Y/O brother, Aaron Ventress, born in TN.

The 1880 US Census of DeKalb Co., AL enumerated the household of 63 Y/O (actual age 65) Andrew Jackson Berry, Sr., a farmer born in Tennessee, and his 64 Y/O (actual age 68) wife, Winnie (Winnifred), born in South Carolina. Also in the household was their 25 Y/O son, Andrew Jackson Berry, Jr. (1854-1913?), a farm laborer (b. October 1854-See 1900 Census of Bell Co., TX). **On this census page, all three members of the household are recorded as being born in "Ohio" which was a gross enumeration error**. Andrew Jackson Berry, Sr. was born in Tennessee; Winnifred F. "Winnie" Ward Berry was born in South Carolina and their son, Andrew Jackson Berry, Jr. (1854-1913?) was born in Alabama.
