Hugh was a farmer and carpenter by trade. He enlisted into servoce during the Civil War, August 9, 1862 serving in Company G, 137th Regiment until April 30, 1863. He mustered into service September 8, 1862 and mustered out June 1, 1863. THere was no evidence of disability.
The family suffered great hardship while he was in the Army.
They were Scotch Covenanters and would go to church in the winter by sled, staying all day, and taking along their lunch. On one such trip, Martha Johanna, a small infant smothered to death.
