Per John Thornton's will (died 17 Dec 1857 in St. Louis, MO, see memorial: 47114343) he left bequests to his five nieces and nephews in the Dubuque area, "the surviving children of my late brother Patrick Thornton...". (Patrick Thornton died in 1849 in Dubuque).
