He became a blacksmith as a young man and plied his trade from Arkansas to Texas and Oklahoma, arriving in Kansas about 1892. He opened a shop in Elm, Labette County, in 1894, moving on to Kimball, Neosho County in 1904. In 1922 he moved his shop to Erie, Neosho County, then about 1933 to Parsons, Labette County where he retired at the age of 76 in 1945.
He married Florence Catherine (Holloway) Harding (1882-1970) at Shaw, Kansas in 1912. He and Florence had two children, James Edward, Jr. (1916-1971) and Catherine Elizabeth (1919-2001). He died April 24, 1959 in McCune, Crawford County, Kansas, at the age of 89.
