She was born on Aug. 26, 1915 in Canastota, a daughter of John and Angeline DeSantis Cerio.
Virginia spent most of her life in Canastota, attending the Canastota schools. She moved to Whitney Point to live with her daughter in 2004.
She worked at Diemolding Corporation in Canastota for 25 years, retiring in 1978.
Virginia was a member of St. Agatha's Church, Canastota, and its Altar Rosary Society.
She was an avid bowler, and also enjoyed crocheting, vegetable and flower gardening, and was a great cook.
Virginia married Joseph W. Valerio on Oct. 2, 1937, in Canastota. Joe died on Nov. 13, 1991.
Surviving are: two sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph J. and Kathleen Valerio of Ballston Spa, and Richard and P.J. Valerio of Silverdale, Wash.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Margaret and William Weismore of Whitney Point, and Linda Hickey of Gainesville, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Jane Paone of Chittenango; 12 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Virginia was predeceased by a son-in-law, Eugene Hickey on Sept. 5, 2010; three brothers, Anthony Cerio, Nicholas Cerio, and Joseph Cerio; and five sisters, Josephine Petrella, Marguerite Dellepenta, Matilda Lockett, Mary Waldo, and Florence Scarsone.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, July 26, 2013, at St. Agatha's Church, Canastota, where a funeral mass will be held. Burial will be in St. Agatha's Cemetery, Canastota. Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 5-8 p.m., at the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James St., Canastota. In her memory, contributions may be made to St. Agatha's Church, 329 N. Peterboro St., Canastota, N.Y. 13032, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
