Richard R. Carle, 94, of Schofield, died Friday, Jan. 27, 2012, under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services at Sylvan Crossings on Evergreen, Wausau.

He was born Nov. 11, 1917, in Brule, Wis., son of the late Edward and Floy (Walker) Carle. He married Virginia St. Louis on Oct. 21, 1939, in Phelps. She passed away May 19, 1986, in Wausau. Richard married Veronica Schaak on April 22, 1989, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Weston.

Richard grew up and went to school in the Iron Mountain and Kingsford, Mich., areas. He worked in a saw mill in Phelps; as a truck driver in Escanaba, Mich., then moved to Wausau and worked in construction. Richard then took welding classes at a technical school and became a welder for Wausau Iron Works and 3M, and taught welding at Northcentral Technical College. He was in the Civilian Conservation Corps and, during the war, he got deferments to weld for the war effort.

A great athlete and sports enthusiast, Dick excelled in baseball, bowling and golf, but he also enjoyed watching the Milwaukee Brewers and Green Bay Packers. Dancing, playing cards, gardening, woodworking and traveling were favorites of his. He was dedicated to his family and enjoyed spending time with them.

Survivors include his wife, Veronica, Wausau; two sons, Gary (Mary) Carle, Weston, and John Carle, Bishopville, S.C.; three grandchildren, Carissa (David) Marshall, Madison, and Christopher and Nathaniel Carle, both of Los Angeles; two sisters, Jean Phillips and Evelyn Burns, both of Michigan; Veronica's children, Carole Blomberg, Florida, Jim (Kathy) Schaak, California, Mark (Katie Marie) Schaak, Utah, Gale (Jim) Gilge, Rothschild, and Mary (Gary) Barnett, Weston; 20 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren, which were all an integral part of his family.

He was also preceded in death by five brothers, four sisters; and Veronica's son, Edward Schaack; and her three granddaughters, Pamela Marquardt, Kim Schultz and Christine Milkey.

Entombment will be in Memorial Chapel Mausoleum, Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Wausau.
