Thomas Cover IV, 70, active in GOP politics

Thomas Cover IV, former owner and operator of the Sanitary Laundry Co. who was active in Republican politics, died of cancer Tuesday at his Ruxton home. He was 70.

Mr. Cover ran the dry cleaning and restaurant linen service on East Preston Street from 1952 until selling it in 1982. It had been founded by his grandfather in the 1870s.

Born in Baltimore and raised in Garrison, he was a 1949 graduate of Woodberry Forest School in Orange, Va. He attended Yale University and served in the Army during the Korean War.

Mr. Cover served as campaign manager and adviser to Jervis S. Finney during successful bids for the Baltimore County Council in 1962 and state Senate in 1966, and the Maryland campaign for Richard M. Nixon in the 1968 and 1972 presidential elections.

"He had an uncanny sense of people's thoughts, which made him particularly capable in political campaigns," said Mr. Finney, a former U.S. attorney and now president of the nonprofit Maryland Criminal Justice Administration Institute.

Mr. Cover was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Garrison Forest.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, the former Anne Carroll Hill; two sons, Thomas H. Cover of Cockeysville and McLane F. Cover of Dedham, Mass.; a brother, E. McIntosh Cover of Skidaway Island, Ga.; his stepmother, Anne C. Cover of Towson; two stepsons, Scott M. Taliaferro of Towson and Alexander M. Taliaferro of Nantucket, Mass.; and five grandchildren. His first marriage to Betsy Fisher ended in divorce.
