Rachel was reportedly half Cherokee, and we don't know her maiden name. She and her husband, Isaac Smith, came from North Carolina in 1825 and settled in the vicinity of present day Walnut Hill.
Rumor has it that her burial and Margaret Gaston Kell's both happened during the same time of the week in August of 1831, and both could have been the first in what is now Old Covenanter. Their burials were separated by 3 days.
