Born in Pitt County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Pitt County at age 31, Jan. 27, 1862.

Captured at Bristoe Station, Va., Oct. 14, 1863. Confined at Old Capitol Prison, Washington, D.C. Transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland, Oct. 27, 1863.

Paroled at Point Lookout on Sept. 18, 1864. Received at Varina, Va.,Sept. 22, 1864, for exchange. Hospitalized at Richmond, Va., where he died on Oct. 1, 1864, of "scorbutus."

Gravesite Details

... Ninety foot granite pyramid, completed in 1869, is a monument to 18,000 Confederate enlisted men buried nearby. They went into battle for what seemed then a noble cause of protecting their homes from northern aggression. (Tim Oliver 2/24/2013)
