There is conflicting information regarding the names of James' wives. Most information indicates that three of of his four wives and their children are as listed below.

All reports confirm that Martha L. Brooks was his 4th and last wife. Therefore, one of his wives is missing from the listing below. Records show that a James E. Angel married Margaret Hughes on Oct. 12, 1838 and Elinor Nichols on Feb. 26, 1842. Could one of these marriages have been for James P. Angel?

It is believed that Elizabeth may have been part-Cherokee. On the 1840 census for Macon Co., NC, she is listed as head of household. In her household are "other free persons of color" which generally meant Native American.

She and James were presumably divorced as she was the head of her household and James was still living.
