Jack Duncan, 84, retired Columbia businessman, died Monday, May 2, 2011 at his residence in Jackson.
The family will visit with friends Wednesday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at George A. Smith and Sons North Chapel in Jackson. Graveside services will be conducted Thursday at 1:00 p.m. at Polk Memorial Gardens with Rev. Ron Rogers officiating. Military honors at graveside will be provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19. The family will visit with friends at graveside. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 322 8th Avenue, 7th Floor, New York, New York 10001, American Cancer Society, P. O. Box 1864, Columbia, Tennessee 38402, or West Jackson Baptist Church 580 Oil Well Road, Jackson, Tennessee 38305. Oakes & Nichols Funeral Directors are assisting the family with arrangements. Jack was a veteran of World War II where he served in the U. S. Army from 1944 until 1946. He worked in the used car business for many years and later became co-owner of Riverside Supermarket in Columbia. He was an active member of the American Legion for over 60 years. After several years of retirement on the Tennessee River, he and his wife, Helen moved to Jackson where they lived with their daughter and family.
He was a member of West Jackson Baptist Church and the Alred/Goddard Sunday School Class. He loved his church and Sunday School Class.
Son of the late R.F. Duncan and Lacy Follis Duncan, Jack was also preceded in death by his five brothers, Herschel Phelps Duncan, Robert Duncan, Rufus (Cotton) Duncan, Billy Ray Duncan, and Jimmy Duncan.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Helen Norman Duncan; his children, Jackie (Wayne) Logue of Jackson and Terry (Pam) Duncan pf Franklin; his grandchildren, Nick Logue, Taryn Duncan and Adam Duncan; a sister, Lucille Norman of Lakeland, Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
Active Pallbearers are Nick Logue, Adam Duncan, Jimmy Duvall, Tim Hickey, and Ray Smith. Honorary pallbearers include Dr. David Larsen, Harrell Phillips, Judge James D. Todd, Dwayne Hopper, Danny Dodd, Daryl Cox, Terry Cox, and Members of the Alred/Goddard Sunday School Class.
