John volunteered in the Union Army in June 1861 under the first call for men for three years, or until the end of the war. He was a private in Co. A., 11th Regt. Ills. Vol. Infantry. John was killed in action on the battlefield at Ft. Donelson, Tennessee, and was originally buried in a trench with 61 other men. The trench was marked with who was buried in it and later their bodies were moved to this cemetery. He is buried in an unmarked grave.
