Bobby D. Allara, 74, of Iaeger died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004, in CAMC Memorial Hospital following a short illness.

Mr. Allara was born March 9, 1930, in Matewan, a son of the late Jack and Mamie Humphrey Allara.

He graduated from Iaeger High School in 1948 where he was a star basketball player in the late 40s. He also attended West Virginia University. Mr. Allara attained the rank of corporal in the United States Marine Corps, having served during the Korean Conflict. He was self-employed for 32 years, the former owner and operator of J.M. Allara Company and retired from the McDowell County Board of Education in 1990. He was also a member of the Iaeger Lions Club and of the First United Methodist Church, Iaeger.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Dr. Earl Allara.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Barbara Cooke Allara of the home; two sons, Dr. Jack Allara II of Roanoke, Va., Dr. David Allara of Charleston; one daughter, Barbara Dawn Neighbors of Roanoke; and eight grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, at the chapel of Fanning Funeral Home, Iaeger, with the Rev. Kenny Stevenson officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Princeton, where military graveside rites will be conducted by the Mercer County Veterans Council.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Johnny Mayhew, Marion, Jimmy and Billy Deskins, Ricky Dotson, Doug Pauley and John, Jeff and Jason Allara. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Iaeger Lions Club.

Fanning Funeral Home, Iaeger, is in charge of arrangements.
