According to his wife, Sallie Wilcox Ryals, John J Ryals enlisted in June 1862. They married 20 May 1855. He was marching near Mt. Jackson in Virginia when he dropped out. He was sent to the hospital near there where he died on 5 Dec. 1862. He was never heard from again. So this memorial is a cenotaph marker.
