She was born May 1, 1927, in Puritan Location, Bessemer Township, daughter of the late John and Emma (Elsner) LaChapelle. Mae attended Puritan schools and graduated from the A.D. Johnston High School in Bessemer with the class of 1945.
She was employed as a stenographer at the Gogebic County Courthouse in Bessemer until 1950.
Mae was a member of the St. Sebastian Catholic Church in Bessemer, where she was united in marriage to Leno L. Brentar on May 14, 1949, by the Rev. David Harris.
Mae enjoyed baking and gardening and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by two sons, Robert (Rita) Brentar, of Bessemer, and Bill (Ginine) Brentar, of Cummings, Ga.; two daughters, Rose (Michael) Jacobson and Donna (Tom) Matrella, both of Bessemer; seven grandchildren, Robert Jr. (Heidi) Brentar, Travis Brentar, Laura (Matt) Mettler, Amy Jacobson, Tracy Jacobson, Jennifer (Mark) Balisi and Jill (David) Acevodo; six great-grandchildren, Zack, Brianna, Ben, Brayden, Noah and Ellah; four sisters, Dorothy (Norbert) Kopecko, of Richmond, Va., Carmen Lukach and Lenore Corullo, both of Hurley, and Margaret Picoldi, of Wakefield; and numerous nieces and nephews. Also surviving is a sister-in-law, Rosemary Strelcheck, of Wakefield.
Besides her parents, Mae was preceded in death by her husband, Leno, on May 23, 2000; three brothers, John "Jack," Vincent "Shavers" and Francis; and a sister, Della Aspinwall.
Cremation will take place at the Range Crematory.
A graveside memorial service will be held at Hillcrest Cemetery in Bessemer.
