FARLINGTON—Hugh Bass Matlock, 85, of Farlington, died at 11:50 a.m. Tuesday, July 14, 1992, at Mercy Hospital in Fort Scott. He had been in failing health since February.
Mr. Matlock was born Nov. 25, 1906 at Morris, Okla., the son of William and May Bass Matlock. He grew up and attended rural schools at Farlington.
He married Phoebe Mary Graham, March 30, 1926 at Girard. She preceded him in death May 16, 1987.
Mr. Matlock was a foreman on the maintenance of way for the Frisco Railroad for 48 years, retiring Nov. 25, 1971. He was a resident of Farlington for 45 years.
He was a member of the Victory Life Church of Pittsburg and the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way.
Survivors include three sons, William Keith Matlock of Farlington, Darrell G. Matlock of Springfield, Mo., and Kenneth E. Matlock of Olympia, Wash.; three daughters, Kay L. Bennett of Chanute, Naomi M. Collins and Sharon S. Forish of Latrobe, Pa., three sisters, Iva Hill of Girard, Ethel McCracken of Farlington; 26 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Hugh B. Matlock Jr. and Donald Dean Matlock; one daughter, Ila Rose Kramer, two brothers, Howard Matlock and Price Matlock, two sisters, Bessie Ditto and Anna Toms, and one grandson.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard, with the Rev. Don Talent officiating. Burial will be in the Girard Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, where friends may call after 3 p.m. today.
