There is a discrepancy between the year of birth on the grave marker and the Joplin Globe Newspaper obituary for Mr. Barnard. After some research, below is what I found and from that, you may make your own decision as to what is correct. You cannot just always believe 1 piece of evidence, such as the obituary or death certificate as being accurate, because someone else is always giving that information and maybe they know or maybe not. Obviously, his parents thought his was born in 1888, but he must have figured later he was born in 1887. I have him listed with the year date on the marker and will not make any further changes. --NJBrewer

*In 1900, his parents lived in Miami, (Ottawa Nation) OK, and they gave his birth year as 1888.
*In 1910, the parents and Virgil were living in Neosho, MO, and the parents gave his birth year as 1890!
*Then in 1920, the family was living in Neosho, MO and gave his birth year as 1888.
*In 1930, his father must have passed away, as he was living with his mother in Joplin (she was listed as head, but showed no employment, she was 63). He was listed as son, a painter and paperhanger at age 42.
*In 1940, he was listed as head of house, single, living with his mother (74) and brother Harry. Gave his birth year as 1887, age 53.
*The references above obviously are consistent with his birth year as 1887.
