Cornelius was born 01 Feb 1859 in Inderoy, Nord-Trondelag, Norway to Petter Pedersen Norum and Margrethe Kirstine Mortensdatter Refsaas. As a teen, he moved to Trondheimin in the neighboring county of Sor-Trondelag to learn the trade of tailor. He apprenticed under his cousin, Olaus Ingebrigtsen. It was in Trondheim where he met his future wife, Maren Kirstine Magnusdatter Dybdahl, daughter of Julie Estensdatter Aas and Magnus Ostensen Dybdahl. Cornelius left Norway in April of 1882 and settled in Chicago. In 1884 he sent for his wife, Maren, and daughter, Petra, who was born in Bakklandet, Norway after he left. He and Maren had 14 more children, all born in Chicago. Sadly, many of the children passed away very young. Cornelius worked as a tailor in Chicago until his death,which occurred almost exactly 21 years from the day he left Norway. He only lived to 44 years of age.
