George Samuel Bartley (1861-1917) was born and raised in Rockbridge VA. In 1879, at the age of 18, George Samuel and another boy (John Camden) ventured to Ohio. Two years later his sister (Mary Lucy 1859-1892) who was married to John Dodd (1853-1937) also came to Ohio. One year later in 1882 his father (Henry Allen 1836-1911) and mother (Jane Francis 1831-1911) came to Ohio with George's two youngest sisters (Hannah and Henrietta). Henry and Jane established their home in Grape Grove, Ohio, in a house that George Samuel had already made ready for them. On 29 Dec 1886, George Samuel Bartley married Maud Pitcher Short (1865-1938). Together they had a family of six boys: Ira Allen 1889-1959, Harry Samuel 1891-1957, Ralph Short 1893-1941, Clyde Lewis 1895-1957, George William 1898-1942, Charles Emmit 1903-1967.
