Monroe was a great father and grandfather.

Monroe grew up on a farm in Decatur county, Iowa. Monroe was plowing a field with a mule. He stopped and walked to the front of the plow. Something spooked the mule, it began pulling the plow, and the blade entered Monroe's leg, nearly stripping his calf muscle completely off the bone. A terrible injury in those days. The doctors placed maggots in the wound daily to keep the wound clean and in time Monroe's leg healed. It didn't look pretty but he was not disabled from the injury. Monroe led a full life with no consequences from the injury.
Grandpa was a character! He had a great sense of humor and was always pulling someone's leg. He once told his granddaughter the reason he was bald was because grandma pulled all his hair out. His granddaughter was so mortified that grandma told him to never tell that to another grandchild.

Monroe married Velva Louise Elston on June 4, 1935.
