Akers, Wayne J., 94, of Wheeling, died peacefully on November 2, 2003 at the Wheeling Hospital, Wheeling. Mr. Akers was born in Edgarton, West Virginia on June 28, 1909 the son of the late Wayne J. and Ida Bellamy Akers, Sr. During World War II, he served with the Fifth Marine Division: Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 27th Regiment. Mr. Akers' career, from 1925 until 1976, was with The Valley Camp Coal Company. He retired President of the Pennsylvania and West Virginia Supply Corporation and was past president of the Valley Camp Stores Company. In 1989, he retired as chairman of the Board of Directors of the former Fed One Savings Bank Wheeling. Mr. Akers was past president of the National Industrial Stores Association; past member of the Board of Directors of the Ohio Valley Medical Association; and past president of the Ohio Valley Senior Golf Association. He was a member of the Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church and belonged to the Fort Henry Club of Wheeling. He also belonged to the American Legion Post # 1, of Wheeling. Mr. Akers enjoyed golf and was an avid gardener of English Roses. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Kelly Miles Akers, James Akers, and Roy Akers; and a sister, Melda Akers Buckley. Surviving are his beloved wife of 56 years, Margaret Bradford Akers; two daughters, Margaret Akers and her husband, Lewis Tisher of Chapel Hill, NC, and Elizabeth Akers and her husband, Dean Silverman of McLean, VA; and two grandchildren, Wayne A. Chomitz of Chapel Hill, NC, and Chloe E. Akers-Silverman of McLean, VA; a special niece, Pauline Tucker of Hugheston, WV; and other nieces and nephews. Friends will be received Wednesday, November 5, 2003 from 11:30 am until time of service at 1:00 pm at the Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church, Wheeling, with the Reverend Dr. George B. Kurtz, III officiating. Interment at the convenience of the family in Greenwood Cemetery, Wheeling. Memorial contributions may be made to the Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church, 905 National Road, Wheeling, WV. 26003 or the Seeing Hand Association, Inc., 750 Main Street, Wheeling, WV. 26003.
