The second of eleven children born to Colonel Daniel & Margaret (Hughes) Kennedy of Frederick Co VA and late of Greene Co TN, Thomas married Esther Laney on 27 Mar 1798 in Green Co TN.

The 1850 Census shows Thomas is 72 yrs old and widowed. The 1860 census shows he is 81 and owns a considerable amount of property, both real estate and personal. On both census records he lives by himself.
