Darrel was the son of Truman Ridlon Cavanaugh and Jean Avonne Phillips. He had one sibling, Dale William Cavanaugh born Nov. 18th 1950.
His early childhood was spent in Lyndonville, VT. In Junior High his parents moved the family to Norwalk and later Lordship, CT. where they opened two children's clothing stores and taught school.
Darrel graduated from Stratford High in 1964 and joined the Navy on a 3 year buddy system with Bill Cook, a High School friend. They were not fortunate enough to stay together. Bill went to a Philippine's Base, while Darrel became a Navigator on the "Hornet" and served Honorably during the Viet Nam War off the shores of the Philippines and Viet Nam. Some of his duties included flying on helicopter rescue missions to get wounded soldiers, in jungle areas. One of his buddies never returned from one such mission.
Just before Darrel mustered out, he contracted Malaria for which he required hospitalization. The Navy then made arrangements for him to spend a month with a California family to recuperate before heading home to CT. He had lost a great deal of weight and he needed to be monitored for reoccurrences of the malaria. It was during this time that he submitted drawings to Southern CT. State College in hopes of admission.
He enter Southern Connecticut State College in 1967. Originally an Art Student, he would graduate in 1973 with a B.S. in Math and Earth Science, following in his father's footsteps.
In 1967, he met Marilyn Ann Senecal and they married Aug. 29th 1970. In 1973, they moved the family, two boys under two years old, across country. Darrel spent the next 5 years teaching at Elk River School, in a remote area of Idaho.
Darrel continued to pursue a Master's Degree, Educational Specialist Credentials and his Superintendent Degree. He completed them all by 1978. He was also an EMT, Volunteer Fireman, and on the City Council, as well as responsible for the Yearbook.
In 1978, the family, which consisted of 4 children,a cat, dog and 2 adults, moved from Idaho in search of a better job. After several tries in different areas, Darrel accepted a job at an Alternative School in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho.
A house was built in Post Falls and roots were put down. He taught Science and Math. He was asked to teach Computer Science at night for North Idaho College. Personal Computers were the in thing and everyone wanted to learn about them.
Darrel taught in the Coeur D'Alene School District from 1980 until his unexpected death in 1994. He was respected in the community, as he had touched many lives.
He died from a massive heart attack after hiking to the Post Falls Lagoon to give our dogs some exercise. He left behind Sandor 22, Trevor 21, Tiffany 18, Christopher 17, Marilyn 45 and a menagerie of pets.
He loved his job working with students who couldn't cut it in the regular school system and they loved him. We still miss some of the funny stuff he used to do. He had a great sense of humor.
He was only 47 when he passed. His funeral was the largest St Georges Church in Post Falls ever had. He has been missed.
In his spare time, the family loved to take camping trips. He died just a few days after Tiffany's graduation, all the family was together and had some great times to hold in our hearts.
