Amos was a graduate of Central Missouri State College and the University of Chicago. He taught history and economics at Central Missouri State and Yankton College, Yankton, South Dakota, before coming to Kansas City in 1926 to become chairman of the history department of Kansas City Junior College. He resigned that position in 1944 to become assistant director of the Legislative Research Bureau of Jefferson City, MO. In 1949 he was called back to Kansas City to become secretary of the Board of Education. At that time the district had suffered several levy defeats which had forced cancellation of part of the school year. As secretary of the Board Mr. Burks coordinated levy campaigns. He also served as legislative liaison for the Board. Mr. Burks retired from that position in 1967. He was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church and a member of the DeMolay Legion of Honor and active in scouting activities.
He leaves his wife Mary Morrow Burks and two sons: Dr James L Burks of Chicago, IL and Dr Walter Morrow Burks of Kansas City, MO.
