....................
A Muskegon Heights man whom authorities think suffered a fatal reaction to a bee sting while playing golf Tuesday apparently did not know he had any severe allergies.

Vernon Runk, 58, of 3362 Hoyt Street died while on the fourth hole of the Oak Ridge Golf Course, 513 Pontaluna. He apparently suffered a fatal allergic reaction to a bee sting sustained around 6pm. He was playing in the championship round of a league golf tournament at the time of his death. Runk's uncle Lester Runk, 3167 South Fruitport - said this morning Runk had hit his drive off the fourth tee and the ball landed under a tree. Lester Runk said his nephew was stung when he stepped under the tree to see if he could hit his second shot. He collapsed and efforts of other golfers and personnel from the Norton Shores Fire Department failed to revive him. Runk was taken by ambulance to Mercy Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Lester Runk said Vernon Runk's wife, Shirley, told him Vernon Runk did not know he had any active allergies. "In the past few years he had some minor ones, like from a cat," Lester Runk said. "But all he'd ever had was a little swelling. To my knowledge he was never treated for allergies."

Runk, who retired as employment manager of SD Warren company two years ago, was playing in the championship round of a golf tournament at the time of the accident. He was an avid golfer and 17-year member of the golf club at which he died. Runk's family and friends remained stunned today over his sudden death. "I found out about it when I got home at 11:30 that night," said Paul Schuiteman, SD Warren human resources manager who worked with Runk for almost 1 1/2 decades. "What a shock it was. We just saw him last Friday night when my son got married." "He had more friends than anybody I've ever met in my life. He was a caring person, had a great personality. Everybody just thought the world of him. He had been really looking forward to his retirement, and was really enjoying it."

Services for Runk will be held at 1 pm Friday at Lee Funeral Home. Visitation today at the funeral home is from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm.

Runk is survived by his wife, one son, David, of Muskegon Heights; two daughters, Susan Yager of Louisville, KY and Tammy of Muskegon Heights; and two grandchildren.
