He was the son of Francis August Kellar (1866-?) and Catherine Gleeson (1869-?) aka Katherine Gleason. Both parents were from Ireland.

Francis Herbert Kellar was baptised on August 26, 1888 at the Parish of St. Paul the Apostle, in Manhattan, New York City.

First marriage:
Francis Herbert Kellar married Anna Elizabeth Lane (1890-1919) of Ireland on May 25, 1913 at the Church of St. Charles in New York. She was the daughter of Timothy D. Lane (1869-?) and Elizabeth Downey (1865-?) of Ireland.

Children:
Herbert Francis Xavier Kellar (1914-1970) who was born on December 29, 1914 in New York and married Marjorie Freeman; and Anita M. Kellar (1919) who was born in January of 1919 and died April 20, 1919.

His obituary appeared in the May 07, 1934 New York Times: "Mineola, L. I., May 7, 1934. — Herbert Kellar, formerly connected with The New York Evening Journal and more recently with the Knickerbocker Photos in New York, died here today at his home, 322 First Street. He had been ill a month."
