E. B. Arms was ordained as a Universalist Minister in 1853. He was living in Pike County, AL in 1858 when his first wife, Hellen House, died after complications of childbirth. He most likely met his second wife, Nancy Charity Cawthon, on one of his circuit rides to preach Universalism in Walton County, FL. They married in 1860 and relocated to Garland, Butler County, AL after the Civil War.
